Open-cell foam is sprayed as a liquid and expands many times over within seconds, pressing into every corner of the cavity before it cures. That expansion is the point: it seals as it insulates, so there is no separate gap-filling step.
It stays soft and open in structure, which makes it excellent for sound and lets the assembly dry if it ever gets damp. It is not a moisture barrier, so where water is the concern we use the closed-cell version instead.

About open-cell foam.

01What is the difference between open and closed cell?
Open-cell is lighter, softer and better for sound. Closed-cell is denser, gives more R-value per inch and resists moisture. We use open-cell where sealing and sound matter, closed-cell where damp does.
02Does spray foam smell?
There is an odour during application and while it cures. We ventilate through the day and ask people to stay out of the immediate area until it has set, which is usually a few hours.
03Can it be sprayed over existing insulation?
No. Foam needs a clean substrate to bond to, so anything already in the cavity comes out first. That removal is part of the quote, not an extra.
04Is it worth the extra cost over batts?
In an awkward space, often yes, because it seals gaps that batts cannot. In a clean, regular cavity the advantage is smaller and batts may be the sensible choice.
