Closed-cell foam cures hard and dense, with each cell sealed against its neighbours. That structure is what stops moisture passing through it, and it delivers roughly twice the R-value per inch of anything else on this page.
Because it does so much per inch, it suits places where there is little depth to work with. A rim joist has a few inches at most, and closed-cell turns that into a proper seal where a batt would barely register.

About closed-cell foam.

01Why is closed-cell more expensive?
The material itself costs more and it is applied by trained crew with specialist equipment. It also does more per inch, so the comparison is not straight square footage against a batt.
02Do I still need a vapor barrier with it?
In a crawl space, yes, on the ground. Closed-cell handles the walls and rim, but the ground is a separate job and the barrier is what deals with it.
03Can it be removed later?
It bonds hard to the substrate, so removal means cutting it out. That is worth knowing if you expect to open the wall again for other work.
04How thick does it need to be?
Usually two to three inches on a rim joist. Because it seals as well as insulates, adding depth past that gives less back than people expect.
